Pulling back enough for them to see each other, James gave him a twisted smile. "Maybe we would have. Even if he didn't actually hurt you, he'd still have been a crooked cop, and might have dragged you into it. But maybe without the extra pressure, without feeling like you had to stay to protect Lisa from the abuse, you'd have gotten out and gone straight. Made some kind of big shot of yourself."
He shrugged. "Either way, I knew you had to try. It wasn't just for you, it was for your sister and your mom, too. That's different from me trying to save myself."
